During this mid-season break, we thought it would be the perfect opportunity to revisit why the MX-5 Mk3 and Mk4 were chosen for Miata Trophy, and why they make excellent track and race cars. We've broken the key reasons down into six sections.
Availability
When discussing the MX-5, popularity is an unavoidable topic since it is it is the world's best-selling sports car! Over 1.2 million examples have been produced across four generations since 1989... Also, it remains one of few manual sports cars still in production today.
Whilst the Mk1 and Mk2 models are becoming scarcer and prices are rising to reflect this, the Mk3 remains firmly within the affordable price bracket and is still one of the most common MX-5 generations on UK roads.
The Mk4 however, is now transitioning into the next generation of affordable sports cars, with a growing number being used as track-day vehicles. It is worth getting ahead of the curve in the next evolution of MX-5 racing by starting with a newer platform that is often in better overall condition, while avoiding the corrosion issues that commonly affect earlier generations.
Parts
Due to the sheer number of vehicles produced, combined with strong demand for parts and aftermarket support, used parts, pattern parts, and performance components are readily available from a wide variety of suppliers!
Parts can be sourced through a variety of suppliers; however, we are fortunate to have a strong relationship with Championship sponsor Burton Power, who offer a convenient one-stop shop for many of the mandated components required for the series. Simply search for "Miata Trophy" on the Burton Power website or contact them directly for assistance.

Development
The MX-5 Mk3 has been a staple competitor on the UK motorsport scene and even made an appearance in the very first Trackday Trophy race in 2010. As a result, teams and drivers have accumulated years of research and development on the platform.
The Mk4 has been developed into a complete, reliable, and highly competitive package, positioning it at the sharp end of the grid. Building on the strengths of its predecessor, it features reduced weight, improved aerodynamics, and retains the simple formula that has made the MX-5 such an effective racing platform. The MSVT Racing team has worked closely with suppliers to ensure that every mandated component is affordable, high quality, and durable such as the introduction of an optional Gearbox & Diff cooler to improve drivetrain longevity.
Importantly, Miata Trophy regulations keep both cars within the same class, ensuring close and fair competition without granting either chassis a significant advantage.

Cost
With standard MX-5s often changing hands for anywhere between £1,500 and £10,000, combined with low running costs on the road, they remain an attractive option for both young drivers and those looking for a fun weekend vehicle.
Basic track-prepared examples can often be found between £3,500 and £8,000. As these cars may have led hard lives, it is important to ensure they have been properly maintained and serviced and that any modifications have been carried out using reputable components. Bonus points if they already feature approved championship parts.
Whilst less common, converting a road car into a race car is often more straightforward than many expect, particularly if some of the championship control components are already fitted.
Race-prepared examples start at around £7,000 for rolling projects needing some attention. Expect to pay over £10,000 for a tidy, race-ready example, while freshly built cars are typically over £20,000.
MSVT Racing Tip
Finding a car fitted with quality Coilover suspension, uprated brakes, and performance tyres is highly recommended. Above all, ensure the vehicle has been rigorously maintained, and check for rust in the common areas avoiding poorly repaired or undersealed examples.
Driver Development
Over the years, the MX-5 has established itself as one of the foremost driver-development platforms in motorsport and has helped shape the careers of countless successful racing drivers.
These cars consistently prove themselves to be reliable straight out of the box and can withstand extensive track-day use with minimal modification.
Championship Compatibility
The Mk3 and Mk4 MX-5 provide the ideal platform for drivers looking to progress through the MSVT Racing ladder. Their competitive power-to-weight ratio allows competitors to develop their skills and advance through a clear pathway of championships:
- Step 1 – Trackday Trophy (Class D)
- Step 2 – Trackday Championship (Class D)
- Step 3 – Miata Trophy
