Cadwell Park welcomed Miata Trophy for the penultimate meeting of the championship’s 2025 season on Saturday 6 September.
It was a day to remember for Aidan Hills, winning a pulsating Rounds 11 & 12 in front of the Cult Classics crowd to become the 2025 Miata Trophy Champion-elect!
Qualifying
Hills’ pace was apparent from the start of the morning qualifying session, where he set a strong early benchmark for competitors to try and best. The likes of Jack Brewer, Will Morris and Declan Lee were also looking quick, but no one could stop Hills from securing pole position for the day’s opening race.
A sensational lap time of 1m41.191s earned the #8 driver the accolade, while the competitiveness of the grid was encapsulated by just 0.115s separating Morris, Lee, Cossins, Brewer and Oliver Allwood as the second to sixth fastest qualifiers.
Michael Knibbs, John Langridge, Ben Abbitt and Drew Fletcher rounded out the session’s top ten.
Race One
A superb launch and opening lap stole the lead for Morris, with Hills having to settle for second. Cossins and Allwood were hot on the leading duo’s heels, while reigning Champion Langridge was storming through the field to end the first lap in fifth.
Through the opening few corners of the third lap, Hills managed to get the pass made on Morris to retake the lead. Cossins and Allwood subsequently followed Hills through to sit second and third, with almost nothing between the leading pack. Lee and Knibbs remained in close proximity, while Ben Abbitt, Alex Miller and Nicholas Stott jostled closely to work their way up the order.
With Allwood heavily applying the pressure to Cossins in front, Hills expertly managed to utilise the situation to build a gap to the cars behind. Meanwhile, Langridge, Morris, Brewer and Knibbs were pushing equally hard to maximise their points hauls, running from P4 to P7 as the race entered its final five minutes.
When the checkered flag fell, Hills was at the front to take a well-deserved race victory and earn another valuable helping of championship points. He would be joined on the podium by two Hills Motorsport teammates, with Cossins and Morris second and third respectively.
Langridge would narrowly miss out in fourth, with: Brewer, Knibbs, Allwood, Lee, Fletcher and Abbitt completing the top ten.
Race Two
Anticipation for the day’s second race was high. The reverse grid saw Fletcher start in pole position, with Abbitt joining the #26 driver on the front row. However, it was the two drivers on the second row who looked to enjoy the best initial getaways.
Allwood had seized the lead of the race from fourth on the grid, while Cossins was enjoying an equally brilliant opening lap rising from sixth to second. Knibbs and Lee both looked immediately on the pace, while Hills sought to make his way through the field.
Once again almost nothing could separate the front running pack, with each driver pushing hard to stake their claims on the podium places. It wasn’t just at the front that the action was competitive either, as there were battles aplenty throughout the entire field.
A gripping fight between the top seven was providing fantastic entertainment for those in attendance at Cadwell Park, with only a couple of seconds between them. Allwood was still in the lead, but with Cossins and now Hills in close proximity. Knibbs and Lee were also well amongst it.
With only a couple of laps remaining, Hills made a move on Allwood stick that would prove to be decisive. From that point, the #8 driver didn’t look back to take his second win of the day.
This proved a hugely significant victory, as it saw Hills become the 2025 Miata Trophy Champion-elect! Congratulations to Aidan and the wider Hills Motorsport team.
Allwood would join Hills on the podium finishing second, with Cossins sealing his second trophy of the day by finishing third – with only 0.216s separating the two drivers over the finish line!
Lee, Knibbs, Langridge, Brewer, Morris, Abbitt and Will Powell completed the top ten.
Miata Trophy will next be on circuit for the final two rounds of the season, on the iconic Brands Hatch Indy circuit on Saturday 15 November.
