Tremendous hills double at competitive Silverstone Grand Prix meeting!

08 April 2025

Miata Trophy’s debut on the Silverstone Grand Prix circuit didn’t disappoint. There was action aplenty as the single-make Mazda MX-5 championship took to the current home of the British F1, on Sunday 6 April.

Qualifying

Hills Motorsport/KEW driver Kamal Kalsi was quickest out of the blocks in the morning qualifying session, before his team mate Jack Brewer bettered the previous benchmark. Brewer’s stint at the top of the timing sheet would be brief, with Aidan Hills quickly improving on his own times to set an unbeaten lap of 2m33.623s to secure pole position for the day’s opening race.

Bulphan Service Station/Hills Motorsport’s Colin Bysouth would narrowly miss out on the front of the grid by just 0.031s, while only 0.056s separated Oliver Allwood and Delcan Lee on the second row. James Cossins, Jack Brewer, Alex Miller, John Langridge, Michael Knibbs and Tyler Mcalpin rounded out the top ten qualifiers.

Race One

A great launch from the line by Bysouth immediately put the #888 driver into contention for the race lead, but as the field crossed the line after the first lap Hills was back in front. Inaugural Miata Trophy Champion Lee was hot on the leaders heels, with Allwood and Cossins challenging closely behind.

Close-quarter battling throughout the entire grid was providing plenty of entertainment, as competitors pushed to propel themselves up the order.

As the quartet of Bysouth, Lee, Allwood and Cossins fought for the final two spots on the podium, Hills managed to open up a small buffer in front. Despite the best efforts of those behind, Hills would not relinquish the lead to secure the first-ever Miata Trophy win on the Silverstone Grand Prix circuit.

Bysouth fended off Cossins to finish second by just 0.215s over the finish line, with Lee less than two seconds behind the duo in fourth. Less than one second then separated Brewer, Mcalpin and Morris in fifth, sixth and seventh respectively – with Miller, Kalsi and Will Powell rounding out the top ten finishers.

Special mention goes to Will Morris and Kamal Kalsi for impressively carving their way through the field from the back of the grid, while Aimee Watts and Jack Hargraves also gained good ground in the race from where they qualified.

The fastest lap, 2m34.161s, was set by Hills on lap two.

Race Two

In 2025, the Miata Trophy grid for the day’s second race is determined by the results of the original qualifying session, but with the top ten reversed. Anticipation for an enthralling race was therefore high.

Miller Motorsport’s Alex Miller seized the lead through the opening few corners, before a surging Cossins took the lead heading into Brooklands. Lee followed through, while Hills was again on the pace to end the first lap in third position.

By lap three, Hills was in the lead once more but both Cossins and Bysouth remained in striking distance, all-the-while applying pressure to the #8 driver ahead. Allwood was amongst it once more, while Miller was now in a close battle with Brewer and Langridge just outside of the top five places.

Almost nothing could separate the top three through the final few laps, but when the checkered flag fell, it was Hills who emerged victorious for the second time – completing a tremendous double victory. This time round it was Cossins who edged Bysouth to finish second, with a mere 0.683s separating the top three finishers over the line.

Lee narrowly missed out on the podium, but earned a good haul of points with two fourth-placed finishes. Allwood rounded out the top five, with: Brewer, Mcalpin, Miller, Langridge and Morris completing the top ten.

Hills Motorsport’s Will Morris received the Miata Trophy Driver of the Day award, selected and presented by the Mazda MX-5 Owners Club members in attendance.

Bysouth recorded the race’s fastest lap, courtesy of a 2m33.245s.

Miata Trophy returns on Saturday 17 May for Rounds 5 & 6 of the 2025 season, on the Brands Hatch Grand Prix circuit.
